Alexandra David-Neel was a Belgian-French explorer, spiritualist, Buddhist, anarchist and writer, most known for her visit to Lhasa, Tibet, in 1924, when it was still forbidden to foreigners. David-Neel wrote over 30 books about Eastern religion, philosophy, and her travels. Her teachings influenced beat writers Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, philosopher Alan Watts, and esotericist Benjamin Creme. Seeker, adventurer, pilgrim, and scholar, David-Neel (1868-1969) was the first European woman to explore the once-forbidden city of Lhasa. This memoir offers an objective account of the supernatural events she witnessed during the 1920s among the mystics and hermits of Tibet - including levitation, telepathy, and the ability to walk on water. Includes all the photographs from the original edition.

Taking the Long Way Home : Soul Searching Across America

Description

"I never did get the hang of coin-operated public showers, but nailed sneaking shots of vodka from the freezer while my husband filled up the gas tank." Does your marital bucket list include an extended road trip across America? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to sell everything and start fresh someplace new? Are you looking for a road trip resource that will share the reality of all that togetherness, rather than an edited narrative full of sunshine? If so, this book is for you. In January of 2012, Sonja Millings took an early retirement from the fast-paced corporate world of publishing, and reluctantly accompanied her new husband on his lifelong dream of traveling across the country in a small RV with their Golden Retriever. Prior to the trip, they had never spent more than two consecutive weeks together. What could possibly go wrong? After selling almost everything they owned and renting out their house for a year, they set off on what would become the ultimate test of their new marriage. Endless months on the road provided the perfect opportunity for Sonja to look back on her life and brutally examine her role in past relationships, fully grieve the loss of family members, and challenge lifelong destructive patterns of behavior. It only took 14 months and 38,000 miles. Soul searching across America became an unexpected gift after turning off the noise, getting rid of the clutter, and clearing away the distractions of a busy life.

The Man in the High Castle

Description

The single most resonant and carefully imagined book of Dick s career. "New York Times" It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco, the "I Ching" is as common as the "Yellow Pages." All because some twenty years earlier the United States lost a war and is now occupied by Nazi Germany and Japan. This harrowing, Hugo Award-winning novel is the work that established Philip K. Dick as an innovator in science fiction while breaking the barrier between science fiction and the serious novel of ideas. In it Dick offers a haunting vision of history as a nightmare from which it may just be possible to wake. Winner of the Hugo Award "

Chris Beckett: Mother of Eden

Mother of Eden

Description

Mother of Eden has been shortlisted for the British Science Fiction Association Novel of the Year Award, 2015. 'We speak of a mother's love, but we forget her power. Power over life. Power to give and to withhold.' Generations after the breakup of the human family of Eden, the Johnfolk emphasise knowledge and innovation, the Davidfolk tradition and cohesion. But both have built hierarchical societies sustained by violence and dominated by men - and both claim to be the favoured children of a long-dead woman from Earth that all Eden knows as Gela, the mother of them all. When Starlight Brooking meets a handsome and powerful man from across Worldpool, she believes he will offer an outlet for her ambition and energy. But she has no idea that she will be a stand-in for Gela herself, and wear Gela's ring on her own finger. And she has no idea of the enemies she will make, no inkling that a time will come when she, like John Redlantern, will choose to kill...

"Julep isn't just another high schooler beset by the usual drama of boys and academia. Nope she also happens to be a con artist and master of disguise, which comes in mighty handy when her father mysteriously disappears. Death of a Dutchman

Description

There was enough trouble around to keep the police busy for months. All over Florence tourists were being robbed, cars stolen, and somewhere in the city terrorists were quietly at work. So the suicide of a Dutch jeweller looked like an open and shut case. Certainly, there were some slight discrepancies. But the only witnesses were a blind man, and an old woman given to vicious lying. Yet the Marshal felt uneasy - it was all so conveniently simple.

James Kenneth Galbraith: The End of Normal: The Great Crisis and the Future of Growth

The End of Normal: The Great Crisis and the Future of Growth

Description

From one of the most respected economic thinkers and writers of our time, a brilliant argument about the history and future of economic growth. The years since the Great Crisis of 2008 have seen slow growth, high unemployment, falling home values, chronic deficits, a deepening disaster in Europe and a stale argument between two false solutions, "austerity" on one side and "stimulus" on the other. Both sides and practically all analyses of the crisis so far take for granted that the economic growth from the early 1950s until 2000 interrupted only by the troubled 1970s-represented a normal performance. From this perspective, the crisis was an interruption, caused by bad policy or bad people, and full recovery is to be expected if the cause is corrected. The End of Normalchallenges this view. Placing the crisis in perspective, Galbraith argues that the 1970s already ended the age of easy growth. The 1980s and 1990s saw only uneven growth, with rising inequality within and between countries. And the 2000s saw the end even of that, despite frantic efforts to keep growth going with tax cuts, war spending and financial deregulation. When the crisis finally came, stimulus and automatic stabilization were able to place a floor under economic collapse. But they are not able to bring about a return to high growth and full employment. In The End of Normal, "Galbraith puts his pessimism into an engaging, plausible frame. His contentions deserve the attention of all economists and serious financial minds across the political spectrum" (Publishers Weekly).
